Government releases details of subsidy

THE Government has released details of how much each school in all provinces in the country will receive from the school subsidy it is providing this year.
With the K100million to come from the supplementary budget, total Government subsidy rises to K143million this year for children attending over 300,000 schools in the country.
This include elementary, primary, high, secondary, vocational schools, flexible and open distance education schools.
Details of how much each of these schools will get are published in a Department of Education supplementary, which is in this newspaper.
Under the revised Government education subsidy policy, three components were identified — the operational grant worth about K131.2 million; the education quality programme K6.9 million; and, administration, audit and research worth about K2.1 million.
Secretary for Education Joseph Pagelio said that the amount received by a school depended on the number of students enrolled.
Dr Pagelio has also instructed schools to refund any extra payments made by parents upon receiving the subsidy grants.
He said the education grant was only one component of the schools budget and that parents were required to pay the rest of the fees in order for the school to function well.
Prime minister Sir Michael Somare early this week urged people not to believe in free education promises.
“It must be stated categorically that no quality education comes for free. There was a cost and someone had to pay,” the Prime Minister said.
He said education in PNG was a shared responsibility between the parents and the Government and urged parents to capitalise on the education subsidy.
He said the subsidy he announced was to reduce the fee burden on parents.
