One shot dead and four injured in Beon break-out

By CHRIS TABEL
ONE prisoner was shot dead and four others wounded as they tried to escape from Beon prison in Madang, police in Madang said yesterday.
Five others, however, managed to escape after scaling the prison’s security fences. Madang provincial police commander chief Insp Tony Wagambie (Jr) said the 10 prisoners were scaling the jail fences at around midnight last Saturday, when they were caught and shot at by warders.
Insp Wagambie said the prisoners scaled the fence by standing on each others’ shoulders to reach over the fence.
However, those injured were taken to the Modilon General Hospital for treatment while the body of the dead prisoner had been placed in the morgue awaiting investigations.
Meanwhile, Insp Wagambie said investigations were still underway on the Yabob Road prostitution ring pending negotiations with the Australian High Commission to bring in the Australian man wanted for child prostitution and sex trade charges involving local underage girls.
Insp Wagambie said the girls, aged between 15 and18 years old, were allegedly taken to a house under the guise of being employed as cooks, cleaners and house girls, and forced to have sex for money.
However, the Australian suspect fled after he was asked to come with his lawyer to the Madang police station and is believed to be in Port Moresby.
A Chinese national was arrested and charged for having in possession of an unlicensed firearm, engaging in child prostitution and for obstructing police in the execution of their duties.
He appeared before the Madang District Court and was granted K500 bail and will appear on July 17.
