Members settle advance debts

By JAMES KILA
SEVEN Eastern Highlands provincial assembly members last Friday took full ownership of seven vehicles after they fully repaid advances sought from the provincial administration.
The seven vehicles were purchased in 2003 after the assembly members applied to be paid an advance of K66,000 each in order to purchase brand-new Toyota vehicles from Ela Motors.
Provincial administrator Munare Uyassi said their seven assembly members paid off their dues as of June 1.
The advances were sought from the members’ vehicle allowances.
An agreed amount was then deducted from their fortnightly salaries.
My Uyassi said the vehicles were also purchased to assist members carry out their electoral duties.
The seven members are Orike Bao, Samuel Aito, Walter Nombe, Ivan Ano, Ben Duve, Joksy Nakime and Gideon Korarome.
Mr Nombe, a former Eastern Highlands premier, said this was the first time for such an arrangement to be carried out in the province.
