Vaki condemns police barracks
By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
DEPUTY Police Commissioner for operation
Jeffrey Vaki yesterday described Gordon police barracks in Port Moresby
filthy and a breeding ground for criminals, and ordered a compulsory
work parade starting this Saturday.
Mr Vaki was disgusted with the deteriorating state of the Gordon
barracks while carrying out a clean-up tour for the city’s barracks.
He will later tour all the barracks throughout the country.
“There is a general breakdown in discipline in the barracks. If you
(police officers) cannot discipline your wives and children, how can you
(police officers) go out and enforce law and order?
“You (police officers) go out and tell the public to be good citizens.
Yet you cannot tell your own wives and children.
“No wonder there is an upsurge in criminal activities in the city
because you (police officers) cannot discipline your own wives and
children.”
Mr Vaki also discovered betelnut stain, graffiti and piles of rubbish
around the place, filthy drains and general deteriorating facilities of
the barracks.
“There will now be a compulsory work parade starting on Saturday at 7am
to 11am. I will inspect the barracks the following Saturday. Failure to
do that will result in the fathers of the families be suspended and
eventually dismissed.”
About 300 families live in the barracks.
Those who go to church on Saturdays will have their turn on Sunday.
National Capital District and Central police commander assistant
commissioner Alfred Reu, Crimes director assistant commissioner Raphael
Huafolo and other senior officers accompanied Mr Vaki on the tour.
