Madang lacks policemen

THE Madang police is facing manpower shortage as the national election approaches.
There are at present 245 policemen, both reservists and regulars to service Madang’s six districts alongside polling officials.
Madang PPC Chief Insp Tony Wagambie said that priority would be given to Usino/Bundi and Ramu districts because of their distance and rough terrains.
Another concern that had been stressed was the incoming mobile squads from Momase region who could face housing problem.
Police sources said the squad’s bad reputation prompted the town’s lodging providers to refuse them accommodation.
More than 20 men from the two sections of the Momase mobile squad unit would be deployed during the polling period to maintain law and order.
This, sources said, could be a problem since the mobile squads would play an important part in maintaining security throughout out the polling period.
Mobile squad numbers had not been confirmed as yet, as work was still underway to have them based at the Madang district headquarters for deployment to emergency areas.
Police personnel were expected to be deployed three days prior to polling.
About K10,000 had been allocated to police operations which would include the hiring of about 10 vehicles for use in the six districts.
Mr Wagambie said the funds were insufficient but his men would do their best to carry out their jobs.
