Swimmers gearing up for Dolphin Sprint title

BOROKO Swimming Club will host the Westpac-sponsored Dolphin Sprint during the long Queen’s Birthday weekend at Taurama Swimming Pool in Port Moresby.
The Dolphin Sprint is is one of four premier swimming events held in Papua New Guinea each year and is open to swimmers affiliated to the Papua New Guinea Swimming Inc.
Boroko Swim Club president Mathew Green said a long held tradition of the Boroko Swimming Club is the hosting of this event, and this year Westpac have once again come on board as the major sponsor.
"This year swimmers will travel from across PNG and some from as far as Brisbane to take part," Green said.
A change from the long-course format will see the Championships being held at the Ela Murray International School 25m swimming pool starting on Friday at 5pm for the first session, the second session will be on Saturday, June 9, at 8am, with the third session on the afternoon of June 9 at 3pm. The final session will be held on Sunday, June 10 at 3pm.
"Already 117 swimmers from four years to 54 years from Boroko Swim Club and Lae Swim Club have registered to take part, this being the largest contingent to gather at a Westpac Dolphin Sprint meet for many years and so the club is very excited about the event and members are preparing well to host the sprints," said Green
The sprints will cover all four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly), over distances of 25m, 50m and 100m. In addition to this medley events from 50m, 100m and 200m will be run (this is a series of events involving all four strokes).
The competition will see swimmers chasing gold, silver and bronze Westpac medals as they compete in over 675 events during the weekend. Spectators are most welcome to come and witness our swimmers competing for places and improving times.
The highlight of the relay events will be the return of the popular "Ples of Origin" relays. Swimmers from the various regions of PNG and overseas will band together to race each other to claim first place in this event. Last year the winners of this popular event were Oro and Milne Bay provinces.
Following the championships, PNG Swimming will announce its team to the Pacific Games in Samoa. Swimmers are hard at training, to secure their place on the team.
There is also an opportunity for swimmers between the ages of 10 and 16 to swim qualifying times for a place on the PNG Constantinou development squad and the senior swimmers to make their way into the Elite Target Squad by swimming the necessary qualifying time in their preferred events.
Green acknowledges the financial support of Westpac Bank who will for the second year running, sponsor this event.
There are still vacancies for timekeeping and other technical support, if you can assist please phone Barbara on 321-7115 or Liz on 325-8573 or alternatively drop by at the Ela/Murray School pool any afternoon between 3pm and 5pm and give your name to any of the coaches/officials at training.
