Basketball competition gets heavy towards semis

WITH all the clubs making a push to make it to the semi-finals of the FILBA Western Union Challenge 2007, it was hardly surprising that several players stood out in their bid to give their teams a much-needed boost.
SVS Forwards Wally Parapa and Enrico Magalona teamed up to lift SVS Mart into the top spot when they beat defending champion EMJ Electrical 65-69, last Sunday at Don Bosco Indoor Court in Port Moresby.
Wally Parapa scored 24 points while Enrico Magalona added 14. SVS defended well against EMJ center Joe Elavo who was limited to only 10 points. EMJ guard Dondon Bacani was 10 of 28 on the floor.
EMJ Electrical outscored SVS in the second quarter 23-20, third quarter 16-14 and fourth quarter 14-11, however SVS won the game in the first quarter when they led EMJ, 20-7.
SVS Wally Parapa thwarted a rally initiated by EMJ's Renand Dela Cruz and Dia Muri that saw the score, 59-56, with three minutes left in the game. Wally Parapa countered with three straight baskets to provide the cushion for SVS.
In the other game, Trukai Lions upsets competition leader EMC Steelers, 84-74.
It was Lions' guard Jhonel Flores turns to shine as he pumped in 16 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished off two assists. This was Flores best performance in his third year at FILBA.
Meanwhile, TNT Air Cargo registered their fifth straight win as they hammered the PNG Masters 82-65.
The game featured a battle of giants, Lutz Heim and Moi Muri for the Masters against Eric Kalmbach and Floyd Dye for TNT Air Cargo. The Masters came back strongly in the fourth quarter but fall short as the time runs out on them.
Competition Ladder now stands at SVS 12, EMC 10, TNT 10, EMJ 6, Lions 4, PNG Masters 4.
