Southern Zone the champions

SOUTHERN Zone were crowned Under 19 rugby league champions after winning the BOC-sponsored Under 19 national zone championship in Madang yesterday. They beat the reigning kings Northern Zone 20-18 in the finals at the Ron Albert Oval.
The game was played as curtain-raiser to the SP Cup match between Mabey & Johnson Muruks and Brian Bell Bulldogs.
The Southern Zone victory was first in the zone championship, and they also collected the cash prize from BOC.
Southern Zone coach Paul Willie thanked his boys for playing their guts out to win the match. He also thanked Port Moresby Rugby League chairman Solomon Ravu and Southern region development officer Aquila Emil for his help.
Northern zone coach Willaim Teke said it was unfortunate his boys lost the game however, he thanked the BOC for their major sponsorship.
The PNGRFL chief executive officer Jeff Wade said he was impressed with the standard of football played during the weekend. He said he was particularly impressed with the conduct of the players throughout the tournament.
PNG schoolboys rugby league chairman Ifisoe Segeyaro said the football standard was picking up in the junior division, adding that schoolboy rugby league had a bright future ahead and he was proud to be associated with it.
