GOOD morrow, fair readers! In Britain there’s a move to introduce a four-day working week. Great idea, provided you still receive your present salary. Not so much fun if you’re only being paid for four days work; that would scuttle quite a few family budgets, we suspect.
***
BUT throw irksome care to the winds, for behold the weekend is nudging the horizon. Let there be much frivolity; eat, drink and be merry – for shortly we vote. And that could indeed prove challenging, as voters wade through endless lists of candidates in the hunt for Mr Right – or possibly even Ms Right.

IF we find ourselves with a Parliament that includes even one female member, the House should consider appointing the lady as Speaker. Miss Betty Boothroyd occupied that august position in the British parliament and ruled the House with a velvet-wrapped rod of iron. That’s just what’s lacking in the hallowed halls of Waigani – discipline and respect for Standing Orders.
***
MISS Boothroyd hailed from Yorkshire and had worked for Britain’s most famous chorus line dancers, the Tiller girls, before she became an MP in 1974. She was noted for her good humour and her no-nonsense approach The 62 years old Labour MP was elected to the position of Speaker of the House of Commons on April 27, 1992.
***
BETTY Boothroyd was the first woman elected to the post of Speaker of the House of Commons in its 700-year history. When MPs asked her how they should address her, she famously replied, “Call me Madam.” Later created a lifetime peer, Baroness Boothroyd visited PNG with a British parliamentary delegation, and impressed and delighted all who met her.

FOR Heaven’s sake sell off PNG Power and Telikom to the highest bidders and end the stranglehold of the two under-resourced and ill-managed white elephants. We’re fed up with the flood of justifications from these
“service” suppliers. Maski the excuses; it’s just not good enough.
***
WEDNESDAY night was a nightmare for the many users of the internet and telephone systems; for a period PNG was completely isolated from the rest of the world. Action is long overdue!
