Annual Aust education, training roadshow opens

THE annual Australia Education and Training Roadshow opened in Port Moresby yesterday with many school students, graduates and working class people exploring study opportunities with 16 of Australia’s renowned universities.
The team from Monash University, Griffith, Australian National University, Southern Cross and James Cook universities among others took time to chat with interested applicants at the Holiday Inn and showcase their study programmes.
Australian High Commissioner Chris said PNG had more people enrolled in educational institutions in Australia than any other country in Oceania, except Fiji.
Mr Moraitis said the historical affinity between Australia and PNG and their close geographic proximity made Australia a natural study destination for many PNG citizens and businesses.
Supported by the Australian government through its Trade Commission, Austrade, and its aid agency, AusAID, the two-day roadshow is a premier education and training exhibition in PNG of educational opportunities available in Australia.
Mr Moraitis also cited that PNG was also playing a key role in Australia’s new A$150 million Australia-Pacific Technical College, which would be a centre of training excellence with bases in PNG, Samoa, Vanuatu and Fiji.
Head of AusAID in PNG Margaret Thomas told reporters that 1,000 Papua New Guineans had benefited under its scholarship programme since 1999.
The Australian Development Scholarship is offered each year to 130 Papua New Guineans to study in Australia.
Last year, the Australian government announced that it would double the number of educational scholarships it offers in the Asia-Pacific region.
