Students to showcase talents at picture show

PRIMARY and elementary school children throughout Papua New Guinea will be able to showcase their talents in PNG and to the outside world through pictures.
This follows an invitation by the Japanese government to PNG to participate at the 15th World Children Picture Contest this year.
Last year’s competition, saw a student from Bubia Primary School in Morobe province, Margaret Kabe, taking out an award for her outstanding illustration of PNG.
The Japanese government through its ministries of foreign affairs, education, culture, sport, science and technology, agriculture, forestry, fisheries and other corporate bodies are hosting the 15th World Children Picture Contest in Japan.
Education Secretary Dr Joseph Pagelio has encouraged all school children in PNG to take part in the event, especially given young Kabe’s success.
“The event provides an opportunity for all Papua New Guineans within the education system to develop their thoughts and expose their artistic talents,” he said.
Children between the ages of six and 15 are eligible to enter the contest.
Applications can be printed out from the World Children’s Picture Contest page of the IE-NO-Hikari Association website.
Pictures and application forms must be submitted before Oct 31 to IE-NO-Hikari Association “World Children’s Picture Contest”, Funagawara-cho Ichigay Shinjuku, Tokyo 162-8448 Japan or email culture4f@mva.biglobe.ne.jp.
Each child is expected to submit only one picture and may choose his/her own theme for the picture.
Winners will be announced on the IE-NO-Hikari website in mid-January 2008.
Meanwhile, PNG’s Children’s Day Messages of 2006 won silver and bronze awards respectively at the International Creative Awards Summit held in Portland, USA, on April 30.
Secretary for Community Development Joseph Klapat said PNG beat more than 23 countries to win the award.
The International Children’s Day messages were made by Port Moresby-based video production company Pom Productions with sponsorship by Unicef.
