NI candidate files complaint against Chan
By ELIZABETH VUVU
A CANDIDATE for the New Ireland regional seat has lodged a formal
complaint against the People’s Progress Party and former prime minister
Sir Julius Chan for using his name without consent.
John Temekik said the PPP was using and putting his name on the party’s
election posters without his consent.
He said he had filed his complaint with the Electoral Commission and the
Ombudsman Commission.
Mr Temekik said the use of his name on party posters was misleading his
supporters and was “an outright insult to this integrity as a
candidate”.
He said he was in no way associated with PPP or its founding leader Sir
Julius, the party executives and its supporters.
Mr Temekik had accused PPP of being desperate by resorting to dishonest
tactics to destabilise his campaign.
Meanwhile, Governor Ian Ling-Stuckey had officially made a referral of
Sir Julius and PPP Kavieng open candidate Sition Gion to the Electoral
Commission for alleged illegal campaign practices.
Mr Ling-Stuckey had tendered two documents, one of which was in the form
of a ballot paper with Mr Gion’s picture.
The other document was formatted like a campaign poster with photographs
of Sir Julius and Mr Gion.
Mr Ling-Stuckey said both documents also included the official PPP logo
and urged the “Number One” vote be given to Mr Gion.
Mr Ling-Stuckey was alleging the documents were received at Panamecho
village in Central New Ireland area last April 25, before the issuance
of writs.
Although he did not mention who received the documents, Mr Ling Stuckey
asked the Commission to investigate and take appropriate action.
Both Sir Julius and Mr Gion could not be contacted for comment.
