Telikom to set up wireless phone links

By STEPHANIE WAIDE
TELIKOM PNG is planning to introduce wireless telephone connections to counter the continuous vandalism of telephone cables in the city.
Telikom’s acting CEO Peter Loko said last Friday the Wireless Local Loop (WLL) would be put on trial next month in selected areas in the city.
He said cable vandalism was still a major problem experienced by Telikom, and expressed his disappointment at the manner people were treating the services provided by Telikom.
Mr Loko also said the major power failure last Tuesday and Wednesday threw many of the Telikom’s fixed lines off the air and technicians were forced to work long hours to restore services.
He said Telikom had no excuse to offer its customers.
However, he assured customers that services were restored.
Telikom engineers have initiated a search for new back-up power generation capacity to help overcome the irregular power supply.
He said the irregular power supply had caused major disruption to the main Telikom exchange in Boroko.
Mr Loko assured customers that there was successful restoration of services by last Thursday, and Telikom PNG had set up a task force team to source new generation and automatic switching capacity.
With the mobile roll-out programme, Telikom also made known that it had about 180,000 mobile users in the country making more than a million calls a day.
Telikom has also stated that 10 new super stations would be put up to relieve congestion caused by the constantly growing demand on the Telikom mobile network.
