St John’s Day observed

By GABRIEL FITO
THE St John’s Ambulance in Wewak yesterday joined their counterparts throughout the world in observing the St John’s Day which falls annually on June 24.
The celebrations started with a 150m march from the junction of Bishop Leo High School to the main Wirui cathedral for a combined mass with parishioners.
East Sepik provincial disaster coordinator Michael Kaprangi spoke highly of St John’s contributions, especially during emergencies, adding that the community must recognise their effort and support them where possible.
Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare donated a vehicle to St John’s in 2005, which was converted into an ambulance.
According to St John’s administrative officer Mary Kovingere, the ambulance is their only source of earning an income to help support their programmes in providing continuous humanitarian assistance to the people of East Sepik.
She added that since taking over the administrative responsibility of the Blood Bank from the Wewak General Hospital, St John’s had managed to shore up the dwindling blood supplies as they were always committed to reach out to institutions and villages to collect blood supplies.
Ms Kovingere also urged authorities to help support their operations as all of them were volunteers who were currently being paid K5 per day for any emergency they attend to.
