Miss IBS set for Charity quest

By ELIZABETH MIAE
THE Institute of Business Studies has yet again given its support to the PNG Red Cross Society by sponsoring one of its own students to participate in the 2007 Miss PNG Charity Quest.
Sheila Leo, 22, a certificate-in-accounting student from East Sepik province, has taken up the challenge to contest in the beauty pageant.
Ms Leo has one thing on her mind and that is to do away with violence against women. Her decision to stand for the quest came from experience of being verbally abused when she refused to give K10 to some youths at the Gordon bus stop.
“There’s unfair treatment to women. Violence against women is a problem in Papua New Guinea, and if I am successful, I would make that my priority to minimise violence against women because women are seen as inferior due to traditional customs and beliefs,” Ms Leo said.
She vowed to contribute her time to dealing with issues like HIV/ AIDS, health and poverty.
PNGRC’s secretary-general Jacqueline Boga reminded the contestants that the decision to take part in the quest was a challenge.
She said this should not be seen as beauty quest but a challenge to help the needy.
“PNG Red Cross depends much on these ladies through their fundraising to carry out its programmes,” Ms Boga said.
