ESP CAP on historic assignment

By GABRIEL FITO
TWO hundred and eighty community auxiliary policemen (CAP) from East Sepik, who were tasked by Police Commissioner Gari Baki to serve in the Highlands region during the election period, have made history for the Royal PNG Constabulary.
They are the first auxiliary personnel to serve in any major police operation in the country.
The contingent comprises 10 squads including 14 regular policemen and six reservists.
Their first sector of operations is Tari in the Southern Highlands province.
The Boram airport in Wewak was packed with well-wishers and families of the policemen yesterday, as they were flown out on three separate chartered aircraft.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Leo Kabilo said the bulk of the contingent was made up of auxiliary police personnel, who would participate in their first major assignment.
“They have not being involved in any major police operations before,” he said.
Mr Kabilo said the selection of CAP personnel was based on their high level of performance and professionalism in dealing with lawlessness.
He said the police commissioner was very impressed with their performance and praised them during the provincial police commanders’ conference in Wewak last April.
He said the CAP personnel had made significant contribution fighting crime along the main Sepik Highway, West Coast and Wewak town and such recognition given by the police hierarchy was certainly a boost for police morale in East Sepik.
