NBC concerned over staff safety

THE National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has expressed grave concern over an incident in the Oro province that saw the NBC Radio northern fence being rammed down by a vehicle and its staff threatened by supporters of a sitting member in the province.
Joseph Ealedona, NBC managing director, said he had received reports from NBC Popondetta office and would refer these reports to the Electoral Commission, police, the Ombudsman Commission and the Political Party Integrity Commission.
He urged candidates and their supporters to refrain from such actions.
Mr Ealedona said the NBC was the people’s radio and candidates and their supporters who were not happy with news items or radio programmes especially during this election period have the freedom to express, on radio, their concerns and or their responses to allegations.
The Media Council of PNG also condemned the incident.
Council president Oseah Philemon said they condemned all forms of violence and threats of violence against media personnel and their offices.
He said that violence had no place in free and fair democratic elections and those who thought they were above the law should think again
about their actions.
Mr Philemon urged all candidates and their supporters to follow the right channels to address any grievances they may have over news broadcasts.
“The media has an important role to play in the general election by informing the public about the conduct of the elections and this role should always be respected by everyone including candidates and their supporters,” he said.
