PM lashes out at Madang leaders

By KEVIN PAMBA
PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare said if roads and other infrastructure in Madang are falling apart or non-existent, the people have to blame their seven Members of Parliament.
Sir Michael said the Madang MPs were uncooperative and do not work together on issues of mutual benefit for the province.
He said the disunity among the Madang MPs had denied the province road and other infrastructure development.
Sir Michael made the comments when responding to questions raised by acting Madang governor Bunag Kiup during the launch of the National Development Bank in Madang last Friday.
He said the MPs should have co-operated with Health Minister and Regional MP Sir Peter Barter and Finance Minister and Bogia MP, John Hickey to get things done in the province.
Instead, Sir Michael said, the Madang MPs opted to do things their own way and even want to become Prime Minister, in a veiled attack on prime ministerial aspirant and Usino-Bundi MP Peter Yama.
Sir Michael said no one could lay claim to the prime minister’s position before winning his own seat and those of other candidates who support an aspirant.
Meanwhile, the prime minister told the people of Madang that he would return to power and form the next Government after the elections in August.
Sir Michael said 20 of his 27 sitting MPs in his National Alliance party were likely to retain their seats and this will give him enough numbers to form the new Government.
