H’lands poll security plans please Trawen and Bengo

By HARLYNE JOKU
ELECTORAL Commissioner Andrew Trawen and chairman of the (IDEC) inter-departmental electoral committee Paul Bengo are satisfied with the security operational plans for elections in the Highlands region.
In a joint statement issued last Sunday, the two leaders said they were convinced by the show of strength displayed by the security forces on Saturday in Mt Hagen that the elections would be peaceful.
More than 2,000 security force members have been engaged in the Highlands during polling and counting periods which begins on Saturday.
“We are satisfied with security operational plans for elections in the Highlands region assembled by Police Commissioner Gari Baki and his team.
“What we witnessed on Saturday in Mt Hagen as an overwhelming display of force and is the first of its kind ever staged in a general election,” they said.
Both said that as leaders in the forefront of the conduct of this year’s general election, they were convinced that the show of strength displayed by the security forces was sufficient to guarantee voters a free and peaceful election in the Highlands.
“We commend Mr Baki and his team of experts who have tirelessly worked over the last fw months to come up with this final security blueprint.
“This is a remarkable achievement for our security forces headed by the Royal PNG Constabulary,” they said.
Both men said the assurance of security for voters and polling officials was now guaranteed and the Electoral Commission was ready to begin polls this Saturday.
Commissioner Trawen and Mr Bengo returned from Mt Hagen last Saturday after witnessing a massive election security launch in the area.
