Candidate sues for defamation

A CANDIDATE for the Wewak Open seat and private lawyer Raphael Saulep is suing the Member for Wewak Kimson Kare for defamation and alleged false allegations.
Mr Saulep yesterday filed proceedings in the National Court at Waigani claiming that Mr Kare defamed him by making two false and malicious allegations against him.
Mr Kare is being sued over allegations he made that:
*Saulep Lawyers was paid K65,000 for the purposes of suing Wewak businessman Hugo Berghuser (also a contender for the Wewak Open seat), and that Mr Saulep took the money and never did the work; and,
*That Mr Berghuser allegedly paid Mr Saulep K2 million to halt the case.
Mr Kare claimed that Mr Saulep refused to sue Mr Berghuser because he (Mr Saulep) was bribed by Mr Berghuser.
Mr Saulep said Mr Kare made these false allegations, when he was campaigning at Rumlal, Surai and Shagur villages on Kairiru Island last week.
Mr Saulep has refuted these allegations and is suing the Wewak MP for K1 million for defaming his reputation.
He said in a statement that the allegations by Mr Kare were entirely baseless and made by the Member in an attempt to try and derail his campaign for the Wewak Open seat.
“Mr Kare knows that they were false and malicious. I will not stand by and have him tarnish my reputation and integrity publicly without challenge. Why can’t the Member have the guts to produce a copy of the cheque he alleged was paid to Saulep Lawyers? As for the K2 million, Mr Kare must produce evidence regarding this allegation.”
