Maiba to be printed in Italian

THE novel Maiba, which sparked controversy in the mid-1980s, will be translated into Italian by the ARR Literacy Agency in Italy.
Author Russell Soaba said the ARR Literacy Agency in Italy had shown interest in publishing the book in Italian but had yet to find a publisher.
Mr Soaba said Maiba may be the first to be translated into Italian in Papua New Guinea and would benefit the country.
“When books get translated, people out in the world can read and know about our culture written in their language,” he said.
Mr Soaba, who signed the contract papers and negotiated with the ARR Literacy Agency in the late 1990s, also said that the original publisher of Maiba – Three Continents Press based in Colorado Springs, USA – have also agreed on translating the novel.
Maiba was first written in 1976 and published in 1986.
It sparked international and national controversy because of its story content, which was believed to be racially-depicting.
Maiba is a story of a young girl who grows up in a neglected childhood.
Though orphaned at the age of four, Maiba gains wisdom that incredibly saves her people from the forces of modernity that influence them.
Mr Soaba, a lecturer at the University of PNG for more than 20 years, is also the author of Wanpis, which was also translated into Chinese in the late 1970s.
