Four rapists imprisoned for 11 years each

By JOSHUA ARLO
FOUR teenagers aged between 17 and 18 have been jailed for 11 years each for rape.
The four were sentenced by the National Court in Waigani last Friday.
Konio Havea, Cliff Ari, Dikana Lohia and Peter Morea all from Tubusereia village in Central province were charged with raping a 15-year-old girl at Tubusereia on Oct 2, 2005.
When sentencing the four young men, National Court judge Justice Les Gavara-Nanu said they did not get the maximum penalty of 15 years because there were no weapons used in committing the crime.
However, he said that because they opted to say nothing else throughout the trial and that they did not express any remorse over their action, the court would be hard on them.
Justice Gavara-Nanu told the four that it was not easy for a young woman to come out and tell everybody in a court about her abuse and that it was embarrassing and traumatic for her relive her pain.
Justice Gavara-Nanu said the girl was young like them and that it was embarrassing to relive her experience in court.
