Foreigners charged with attempted bribery

By GABRIEL FITO
TWO foreigners charged with attempted bribery were ordered to be remanded after a brief appearance at the Vanimo district court last week.
Malaysian Ching Loon Chan and Indonesian Paindi Arendi are expected to be brought back to court within the next few days to enter a plea.
They are alleged to have attempted to bribe a customs officer at the Wutung border post when they tried to take 20 passports over to Indonesia for stamping.
Police detained the two men after a customs officer lodged a report that they have offered him K4,000.
Provincial police commander chief Insp Richard Molou told The National yesterday the 20 passports belonged to Singaporeans, Indonesians and Chinese believed to be working at an oil palm plantation and sugar company.
Mr Molou said Paindi was an employee of Higaturu Oil Palm in Oro while Ching was an executive of a Malaysian-based company that supplies machinery to Ramu Sugar in Madang.
He said the men first offered the officer K2,000 and when he declined, then they doubled it.
Mr Molou said when questioned by police, the two men admitted they were taking the passports across the border to have them stamped and signed without the owners having to leave the country.
Meanwhile, the Labour Department is waiting for the Immigration Department for its advise on of the identities of the 20 passport holders.
