Chauka show why they are the best in Highlands

By CLIVE HAWIGEN
CHAUKA premier women’s soccer team proved why they are the current Highlands soccer queen when they thrashed PNG Power 9-0 at the National Sports Institute in Goroka on Saturday.
The huge win makes coach John Kusunan a happy man.
He is now very confident that her girls would take out the Highlands Regional Soccer Championships honours for a record third consecutive year in a row.
He said what they need now is to play a couple of strong teams in the Goroka competition so it could bring out some of their weaknesses and strengths.
He said then they should make room for improvement in exercise.
But the only other team most likely to join Chauka to represent Goroka in the Highlands Regional Soccer Championships is Telikom.
Telikom, like Chauka, have run undefeated after round three of the proper competition and coming off a 5-0 win over Blue Kumuls have a chance to halt Chauka’s campaign.
Chauka’s game on Saturday was a one sided affair as PNG Power could not contain Chauka’s PNG representative player Ara Midi from scoring four superb goals.
It was a team effort with midfielders Cynthia Paguson and Rose Buduma having a hand in most of the goals scored by the girls.
The other goals by Chauka came from Buduma, Janet Tutu, Anna Senna, Vicki Makau and Kisahi Pondros.
In the men’s main game on Sunday Guria came from a two point deficit to clench a 3-2 victory over Crossroads.
Guria started of the game strong with countless attacks on the Crossroads goal but it was a controversial own goal by Guria that gave Crossroads their first goal.
Guria’s sweeper Roger Miamba who wanted to clear the ball away from the goal mouth accidentally scored after pressure was applied by Crossroads Ignatius Talania Jr.
But after the other goal by Crossroads, it was Guria dominated the game scoring three goals through Henry Maino, Sabbath Norman and Gordon Toa.
Meanwhile, results in the other men’s game; Blue Kumuls beat Telikom 2-1, PNG Power beat Chuaka 2-0, and in the women’s game Crossroads and Guria drew 2-2.
