Goroka levels rugby ‘test’
THE visiting Goroka Kilituas defeated Mount Hagen Hammers 18-3 in one of rugby union match played at the Hagen Secondary School Oval on Saturday in Mount Hagen. The tough match kept the crowd on their toes for most part of the game. The Hammers with home crowd advantage and led by Mack Man Luke, John Bain, Henry Ako, Alex Kenndy and former SP Cup inter city league player Billy Gau applied pressure into the Kilituas but the visitors withstood the onslaught. In the first half, Desmond Tete who led by a strong performance scored a try for the Kilituas by picking up a dropped ball from inside his five meters to race away to score for the visitors to lead 5-0 with an unconverted try. A mistake from the Goroka side enabled Hammers to kick a penalty goal for three points. In the second half, Kilituas tightened their defence to deny the home side scoring opportunities. Kilituas extended their lead next when Richard Nake and Yasiua Gheno both scored a converted try each to extend their lead to 18-3. Kelitus coach Isaac Ilailo praised the boys for the victory. The first game, won by Hagen, was played in Goroka and the decider will be played in Goroka for the selection of PJV Highlanders on Sept 15–22.
