Central’s abandoned facility

By HENZY YAKHAM
THE Magarida government station in Central province is an abandoned facility and is now overwhelmed by shrubs with most of the buildings unoccupied and dilapidated.
The main government office building has been shut for lack of maintenance over the years and its deteriorating state had forced station manager Vincent Onaga to carry out government work from his house.
The building has been vandalised with most material removed, and it is gradually rotting away.
The policeman in charge of Magarida lives in a shanty in the nearby settlement because the government house he was supposed to occupy has long been condemned as unfit for human habitation.
The local airstrip was closed years ago because of lack of maintenance and is now overwhelmed by grass and shrubs.
Abau Open candidate and former electoral commissioner Reuben Kaiulo was shocked to learn of the rundown state of Magarida station while campaigning there last week.
He met public servants who revealed to him the absence of housing, health, education, transport, and communication services in the area.
The government-run Iruna health centre, which serves over 15,000 people in Magarida, was closed long time ago.
Likewise, the primary school on Enuoro Island remained closed.
Mr Kaiulo encouraged the public servants to continue doing their best “in this very trying conditions”.
He said if he won in the elections, he would make it his priority to find money to restore vital services to the region, which serves people from Central and Milne Bay provinces.
