Yawari wants polling rescheduled

LAWYERS representing Southern Highlands Governor Hami Yawari have written to the Electoral Commission, warning that they would go to court to halt the elections if polling on Saturday and Sunday were not re-scheduled.
Saturday is holy Sabbath for Seventh Day Adventists and about 50,000 of them may not be able to vote on that day in Lae City and Southern Highlands province, where one-day polling was scheduled for that day.
Mr Yawari said the Electoral Commission must observe and respect the rights of SDAs to worship and uphold their religious duties on that day.
He said polling should also not be conducted on Sunday, as many people would also be in church.
He said if the commission did not give a positive answer today, he would instruct his lawyers to go to court to as for a deferment of the elections until a new schedule has been worked out.
“Saturdays and Sundays are church days and majority of Southern Highlanders are Christians,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Yawari said the provincial government would vigorously defend the lawsuit filed by local level government presidents seeking K125 million from him.
