Wobiro laments lack of progress in Western

WESTERN province has wasted years of development opportunity during the OK Tedi mine era, PNG Party candidate Ati Wobiro said yesterday.
Mr Wobiro said this to a huge crowd who braved the wet conditions to meet PNG Party leader Sir Mekere Morauta and Lady Roslyn.
Sir Mekere could not make the trip because of back pains and was advised by doctors to rest.
Lady Roslyn passed on his apologies to the people on Daru Island.
Mr Wobiro said Western province was fortunate to have the OK Tedi mine which was pumping K50 million annually into the province’s K60 million budget but there was nothing to show for it on the ground.
He blamed the bad state of affairs in the province on bad leadership in the past.
Mr Wobiro, a former executive with PNG Sustainable Development Program, said OK Tedi would phase out its operations and the mine would close in five years time.
“What investments have we made in terms of revenues making opportunities for our people?
“The next five years is our only chance to make something happen for the province and that will all depend on who you vote into Parliament,” he said.
He said Western province was one of the richest provinces in the country, and yet, was classified as a poor province.
“Other provinces are using our money to develop while we get nothing in return for our resources,” he said.
Mr Wobiro told the people that if Sir Mekere became prime minister, free education would be a reality.
South Fly candidate Meremi Maina called on the people to reject leaders who lead by “remote control” in Port Moresby.
Mr Maina, a local businessman, said PNG Party was confident of winning the elections and taking the lead in the formation of the government.
