Police ready for the worst: Baki

SECURITY forces will take a no-nonsense approach to counter any trouble-makers in the general election, Police Commissioner Gari Baki warned.
He said people who were not listed on the electoral roll must accept that they would not be allowed to vote.
“The Electoral Commission had given the people enough time to enroll themselves,” he said.
Mr Baki, who was speaking over NBC Radio’s Talk Back Show on Monday, said Southern Highlands and Enga were priority areas.
“The security forces are prepared for the worst,” he said when asked whether his men were prepared to handle violent incidents in Wabag where armed men blew up a police station and in Southern Highlands where armed men had hijacked ballot boxes.
He assured the public that there would be no foul play by the security forces in securing and transporting the ballot boxes.
He said the PNG Defence Force and Mobile Units would be called to monitor the counting period in the “trouble spots”.
Mr Baki again warned members of the disciplined forces not to accept bribes from candidates.
“Do your duty without fear or favour. Do not accept bribes. Do not take sides with any candidate. Provide an environment where our people can with confidence and safety, caste their votes without fear or undue influence,” he urged them.
More than 11,000 men and women from the the police, PNGDF and CIS will deployed during the elections.
About 2,000 members are heading for Southern Highlands where polling will be held on Saturday.
They will then move to Enga for its July 3 polling, Western Highlands (July 6) and Simbu and Eastern Highlands (July 9).
