Contracts to be reconsidered on performance

By ELIZABETH VUVU
MANUS provincial administration Wep Kanawi is cracking the whip on lazy public servants, who have not been performing.
Mr Kanawi told The National that for a long time now, some public servants had been slacking off, relaxing and not taking their jobs seriously.
“This issue more often than not rears its ugly head in our daily newspapers quite regularly, and this included head of agencies such as provincial administrators,” he said.
He said the Secretary for the Department of Personnel Management had been concerned about the poor level of performance by contract officers within the public service for some time.
He said following a workshop last week conducted by DPM, it was decided that it was mandatory for officers on contract to have the renewal of their contracts tied to the successful accomplishment of planned programmes and projects within specified time frames agreed to between themselves and the head of all agencies.
“This means that contracts would only be renewed if contract officers perform or satisfactorily accomplish their agreed task within the specified time frame. No performance means no contract renewal,” the administrator said.
Mr Kanawi said he had discussed the matter with the provincial human resource manager and they would be asking each contract officer to identify at least four tasks, which he would undertake within 12 months as an assessment benchmark for his contract renewal.
He said a circular discussing further contract renewals had been sent out to deputy and assistant administrators in the province already.
