Public Order Act in force in Goroka

By CLIVE HAWIGEN
POLICE in Eastern Highlands have ordered residents living in and around Goroka town to stay indoors after 10pm.
They are implementing the Public Order Act to prevent any trouble during polling and the counting of votes.
However, provincial police chief Philip Solala said yesterday they were not imposing a curfew but only a move to restrict the movement of people at night.
He said police would also ban the sale and drinking of liquor in public places during the three-week period.
Candidates were advised not to overload their vehicles or risk severe penalties.
“They should also not paste their posters on the windscreens as it would hinder their view,” he said.
Mr Solala thanked Unggai-Bena MP Benny Allen for sending a truckload of foodstuffs to the Goroka police station on Monday as a token of appreciation.
He said it was food that the MP and the people recognised the police’s efforts in trying to maintain law and order in the province.
“It was timely as the food will help sustain the police officers’ families when they are deployed for election duties,” he added.
