Haiveta mourns father’s passing

GULF Governor Chris Haiveta is mourning the death of his father Haiveta Sevese.
Haiveta Snr passed away peacefully at the Port Moresby General Hospital on Monday after an illness, his son Governor Haiveta said yesterday. Haiveta Snr was 85.
Haiveta Sevese was one of the last remaining Cathechist trained by the early Catholic missionaries in Yule Island and Bomana. He also worked for the allied forces during the Second World War, and later help exhumed bodies to be transferred for proper burial at the Bomana War Cemetry.
Haiveta Seseve evangelised for the Catholic church until 1967, when he retired to his home village. He continued to be active in community affairs.
“He’s lived a full life,” Governor Haiveta said of his father. “I’m sad he’s gone, but his contribution has been felt throughout the community and we will remember him for a long time.”
Haiveta Seseve is survived by his wife, four children, 25 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Governor Haiveta, who is seeking re-election for the Gulf Provincial seat, had to cancel campaign engagements to honour custom obligations, which follow the death of his father.
A funeral service is planned for today, and the body is expected to be transported home for burial at his Lese Oalai village on Saturday.
