BestCars, Breakers and Strikers are
snooker champs
PORT Moresby Snooker and Billiards
Association ended another successful season with BestCars, BB
Breakers and Moni Plus Strikers crowned the champions in the SP
Inter-Team competition.
BestCars driven by SP Junior Male Athlete of the Year Djorne
Fong, Boston Seeto, Gus Kraus and John Chan proved too strong
for Lamana, winning 4-0 in the A Grade final at the Port Moresby
Country Club last weekend.
Lamana tried its best to stay in the race with Ken Leo, Arua
Simoi and Yiannis Nicolaou providing some resistance in their
singles matches. But Fong was in top form taking on a determined
Vani Toka in the opening single and winning 73-5 when he
streaked away with a 44 break.
It was a magical result for Kraus, a singles champion in many
events but who has never won a team event since 1975 until
Sunday.
But the more exciting contest was in the B grade final when
reigning premiers BB Breakers had to fight out a decider against
Rapid Woodstock to settle the winner.
One of the top PNG females Vee Ravu started the four-time
premiers on the roll to victory when she won her single against
Paul McLaren 51-13. Geua John, the two-time national champion
who celebrated this year with an SP Sports Award (National
Performance Award), put the Breakers further ahead 2-0 when she
overpowered Chris Thomson 78-41 in the second game.
Alexis Tam defeated Roger Wilson (61-24) and Ron McDonald
applied the breaks on Damita Bray (60-24) to put Woodstock back
in the hunt for the top prize. Woodstock put the pressure back
on the Breakers when Geua and Sandra Chan went down to Thomson
McDonald (68-25) in the first double challenge. But the
champions fought back valiantly when Vee and Arana Taviri held
off Ivan Wallong and Tam (48- 29) to set the scene for a decider
to sort out the eventual winner.
And Wilson and Arana did just that when were just too good for
Ivan and Paul running out convincing 63-2 winners.
The previous weekend, Moni Plus Strikers proved too strong for
Bomana Bullets winning the inaugural C grade title in a 4-0
victory. The Policemen had to fight out a decider against the
media team, PRK Sivarai to earn the right to face the Strikers.
