Votes for dead candidates invalid: Nonggor

By HARLYNE JOKU

THE death of any candidate should not disrupt polling and votes for the deceased will be declared informal, Electoral Commission lawyer Dr John Nonggor said yesterday.
His comments followed the death of three candidates recently – Ananais Popo (Chuave Open), Pou Toivita (Gulf Regional) and Bani Voivo (Oro Regional).
Dr Nonggorr said polling officials in the three electorate would be advised to tell voters not to vote for the deceased.
He said if time permitted, the Electoral Commission would reprint the posters to omit the three persons but this was unlikely.
Mr Nonggor said time was limited and any reprint might delay polling.
It was possible, he said, that the photographs of the three persons would be covered.
Dr Nonggorr said that previously, if a candidate died, a new writ would have to be issued and polling would be delayed.
