Police officer lauds orderly campaigns in S. Highlands

THE Southern Highlands candidates and local people have been praised for ensuring a peaceful campaign period.
Theodore Muriki, acting provincial police commander superintendent, said yesterday he expected this to prevail during the entire polling period.
Mr Muriki said the people wanted to erase the term “failed” province and that they would like to ensure this year’s election was peaceful.
He said more than 2,000 security force personnel that included police, correctional services officers and PNG Defence Force soldiers from Taurama barracks in Port Moresby and Moem barracks in Wewak had moved into their respective assignments for Saturday’s voting.
In a parade yesterday in Mendi, Mr Muriki welcomed the foreign troops to the province and reiterated the Police Commissioner Gari Baki’s message for the local contingent to be on guard against bribery from candidates and their supporters.
A liquor ban had also been imposed in the province for two months starting June 16.
