ENB to run polls on tight budget: Puapena

Province given only K500,000 although K1.8m was requested

By ELIZABETH VUVU

THE ELECTORAL Commission has allocated only K500,000 to run elections in East New Britain , K1.3 million short of the amount requested for.
The provincial election steering committee had asked for K1.8 million to run the elections in the province successfuly.
The lower-than-expected allocation has forced readjustment of funding to priority areas by returning officers.
Danley Puapena, executive officer to the provincial election steering committee, said the Gazelle and Pomio electorate were allocated K95,000 each, while Kokopo and Rabaul got K60,000 each.
He said K100,000 was used to offset outstanding commitments.
Mr Puapena said most of the funds would be spent on transport hire and logistics to send out polling teams to their respective electorate.
Meanwhile, Telikom PNG Ltd branch in the province said all lines connected to respective counting centres had been tested and were ready for use.
Telikom said mobile phones were also in use in Tokua, Kerevat, Warangoi and Toleap, areas which were switched on last month. Palmalmal was currently being worked on.
