Maino wins support of Mekeos

By FRANK ASAELI

PEOPLE of Mekeo in Central province want a new governor and have pledged their support for former Chief Ombudsman Sir Charles Maino.
A rally was held at Sir Charles’s home village of Inawi in Mekeo last Tuesday where he was praised as “honest, accountable and transparent”.
Students of St. Mary’s primary school in Inawi sang the national anthem to and held placards with the word “SIR” – “S” for senior, “I” for intelligence”, and “R” for representative.
A male student said students could make a big difference if they were eligible to vote.
“As age does not permit, we elementary and primary students are not in a position to vote for you (Sir Charles), but if we were to, how surprising it would be for our figures to be added on,” he said.
The student appealed to the people of Central province to vote for Sir Charles.
Inawi village representative Mariano Paipua said the people of Inawi and Mekeo as a whole want people with quality.
Mr Paipua said leaders who misappropriated public funds should resign from public office; however, this was not the case in PNG as the culprits went to court to defend their wrongdoings.
“Sir Charles is quality and Mekeo wants a new leader like Sir Charles,” he said.
Sir Charles is contesting under the umbrella of Pangu Pati against Central Governor Alphonse Moroi and others.
He said he would introduce free education for elementary and primary students up to Grade 8 starting 2009, and free education for Central province students attending universities by 2010 if he was elected.
