Labour database stalled by no-show

By ELIZABETH MIAE

THE launch of a landmark database for Papua New Guinea hit a snag, when it was supposed to be launched yesterday.
Labour and Employment Minister Mathew Siune wasn’t available to launch the database.
Department Secretary David Tibu and other departmental heads, upon hearing of the minister’s unavailability, followed his example and didn’t turn up and as a result, there were many disappointed people.
It is hoped that the database will be launched as soon as a new minister takes office after the elections.
Department of Labour and Employment has taken a huge step in identifying the number of unemployed people in the country through its Labour Market Information System database.
The database, the first of its kind in the country, was funded by the Department of National Planning and Rural Development at a cost of K300,000.
It will be used to record the number of school leavers and skilled persons who are unemployed.
Labour and Employment plans to collect data of unemployed people in all provinces.
The department plans to set up branches in all the provinces to collect data of unemployed people.
Executive officer of youth and special services of the department, Pius Fidelis said the new system was very important.
“This system will help us to tell the government that ‘this is the number of unemployed people in the country, can you create employment for them?’
“This system will identify persons who are skilled and experienced but are unemployed and are capable of doing what foreigners are doing now.”
The media will be used to notify skilled and unskilled people throughout the country to go and register at provincial labour offices.
Their names and educational qualifications will be entered into the database.
