Parkop concerned over city manager advertisement

NCD Regional candidate Powes Parkop said yesterday that the position of city manager should not be filled until after a new government is formed.
He asked why the position was being advertised now when it had been vacant for the past nine months.
He said that to start the process now when the general election was underway was not only insensitive but might also raise some doubts.
The legality of the appointment, for example, could be questioned, he said in response to an advertisement for applicants.
Mr Parkop said the NCD Board, the Public Service Commission and the Department of Personnel Management and other relevant agencies had had sufficient time to make the appointment.
He called on the current transitional government not to make any appointments for the position and to leave it to the new government to decide.
“The government is well aware that its powers to make new appointments ceased upon the issue of the writs for the general election.
“Any appointment made prior to the formation of a new government would not only be illegal but would be politically mischievous given the currency of the national election,” he said in a statement.
Mr Parkop also advised interested candidates to be aware of the consequences.
“If I win the election, I will not respect or honour any appointment made by the current transitional government.”
