Poll officers downplay voters’ list discrepancies

ALL is set for voting in Southern Highlands province despite some discrepancies in the just-released final common roll, provincial elections manager David Wakias said.
Mr Wakias told The National from Mendi yesterday although there were some discrepancies in the new rolls, election officials could not do much about it anymore.
Mr Wakias said about 400,000 registered voters would troop to 740 registered polling places throughout the province.
An estimated 3,700 polling officials and 3,000 security personnel including police, PNG Defence Force soldiers and Correctional Services officers would provide security.
Mr Wakias said candidates’ posters, ballot papers and all materials required for polling had arrived and would be distributed to respective polling places and districts today and tomorrow, along with security force members.
He said all ballot papers and boxes received had been properly recorded, registered and given serial numbers.
“There was a proper registry of the more than 430,000 ballot papers to ensure strict records to avoid misunderstanding and rumours,” Mr Wakias said.
He said that although there were some complaints from candidates and supporters that Seventh Day Adventists followers in the province might not vote on Saturday as it is their worship day, there will not be any extension and everyone in the province are expected to cast their votes on Saturday.
