‘Lecturing’ lawyer gets a reprimand

By JOSHUA ARLO
THE lawyer for an election candidate was reprimanded after he insisted on making his submission in a National Court in Waigani yesterday.
Justice Mark Sevua told Philip Ame not to lecture him on court procedures.
“I tell you what to do,” he told the counsel, adding that he was not in the habit of wasting the court’s time.
He said he did not have the luxury of dragging the proceedings which might as well be dismissed as the defendants had a right to reply to the submission.
However, he then allowed Mr Ame to get his written submission and make his formal submission.
Mr Ame was representing Peter Mision Yaki, who wants the court to disqualify Deputy Prime Minister Don Polye from contesting Kandep Open.
Mr Yaki contends that Mr Polye, who was in court yesterday, failed to nominate in person as required by law.
Voters in Kandep will cast their ballot on Tuesday.
During the hearing, Justice Sevua criticised Mr Ame when the counsel failed to respond to some issues raised by the court several times.
Mr Ame also failed to have his written submission available in court as instructed by Justice Sevua last Monday.
