Flash floods hit POM

By JULIA DAIA BORE
COMMUTERS in Port Moresby were yesterday caught up in an unusually heavy downpour with many cars being submerged in flooded parts of the city.
The National Weather Office reported that the nation’s capital recorded 62.4mm of rain in the last 24 hours starting from 9am last Wednesday to 9am yesterday.
Meteorologist Benjamin Malai said Monday also recorded 4.2mm while Tuesday recorded 3.2mm.
However, he said yesterday’s rainfall record was the next highest since early this year when in March, Port Moresby recorded its highest rainfall with 133.8mm.
Mr Malai explained yesterday’s sudden downpour was a result of the extended winter season in southern hemisphere reaching into the country, triggering the prolonged rains.
He said the typical southern hemisphere winter “frontal system” moving over Australia (from West to East) had its tail-end over Port Moresby, causing the heavy rains.
He added that this weather pattern in Port Moresby would be expected to continue late today and clearing up about tomorrow morning.
Mr Malai said the frontal movement would also pass over the Milne Bay province bringing with it heavy rains too lasting up to three days.
