Students on ‘clean’ mission

By FRANK ASAELI
UNIVERSITY of Papua New Guinea students yesterday started a “clean election” campaign in Port Moresby.
The Students Representative Council-led awareness campaign is taking the message of fair and clean elections to all major markets in the city, where many illiterate people gather.
More than 50 students, who were divided into two groups, braved rainy conditions in Port Moresby yesterday to spread the word at the busy Six-Mile market.
Awareness coordinator Davidson Wayne said they were taking the message of the media, Electoral Commission, Ombudsman Commission and other anti-corruption organisations for safe and corruption-free elections right down to the people.
“We are concerned that the people have not got the message, so we are taking the message across to the people,” he said.
After using loud hailers, the students mingled with the crowd for face-to-face interaction.
They talked about policies of candidates, which must be geared towards long-term benefits and condemned violence and bribery as signs of poor leadership quality.
Mr Wayne said accepting bribes meant immediate benefit, and then people suffered for the rest of the five-year term.
“Vote selling leads to bad governance and leads to zero development and benefits to the people,” he said.
My Wayne said regionalism and ethnic affiliations destroyed clear and honest voting and must be discouraged.
