Commonwealth team to observe

THE Commonwealth Secretariat and the Pacific Islands Forum have deployed a joint Election Assessment Team for this year’s elections scheduled to kick off tomorrow and end on July 10.
Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen said a total of nine officials/monitors will observe the elections in PNG.
He said three observers had arrived in the country and the other six would be here before the elections go into full swing.
Mr Trawen said the Commonwealth and the South Pacific Forum had been very supportive of watching elections in Papua New Guinea.
He said other observers from within Papua New Guinea would include the National Research Institute, UPNG, Unitech, Divine Word University, Vudal University and also two people from the University of South Pacific in Suva and the Australian National University in Canberra.
He said a group from the Australian High Commission, British High Commission and Japanese and Chinese embassies would also be on hand to observe polling around the country.
He said Transparency International, the Holy Spirit Sisters of Madang and Civil Society Groups would also be monitoring the elections.
