Under 16 rugby team wins one, loses
one
By HENRY MORABANG
PAPUA New Guinea Under
16 rugby union team won their first game at the Bisbane State
Junior Rugby Carnival at Nudgee College in Brisbane, Australia.
PNG beat Darling Dawns 10-0 to stamp their mark in the
competition after going down to Townsville in the opening match
15-5.
Winger Jesse Wilakiva and Hohola Suburb's Raphael Saea were the
try scorer for the junior PNG Pukpuks team.
Speaking from Brisbane, coach Philip Ericke Tipora said the team
management was very happy with the overall performance of the
boys.
"In fact, the camp is very excited about the win and they are
looking forward for another two games tomorrow (today)," he
said.
Tipora said he is very confident that with a win against Darling
Dawns, it has really help coach Tarere to gauge the performance
of the boys and other teams.
In the opening match against Townsville, he said PNG could have
won if the Townville referees allow two tries by flanker Kasam
Herita and Jesse Wilakiva but he ruled them forward pass.
However, PNG kept their head down to score through lock forward
Jackson Pato to make the score look more respectable.
Tipora said the boys held Townsville 10-5 but the defence lapsed
in the dying minutes of the game to allow Townsville to score
their last try to bring the score to 15-5.
Today, PNG Pukpuks will have a bye this morning before they take
on South Central Coast in the afternoon, and tomorrow, the boys
will a rest before the final game against Mackay on Saturday.
