Knowing basic medicine
As part of PNG's overall Pacific
Games preparations the PNG Sports Federation in partnership with
the PNG Medical Commission conducted a basic sports medicine
course last weekend to assist the national federations.
The course was conducted by Dr Bernie Amof, Dr Gideon Kendino
and physiotherapist Micheal Wilson at the Gateway Hotel in Port
Moresby funded by the International Olympic Committee under
auspices of PNG Medical Commission.
About 29 participants took part including eight from outside of
Port Moresby comprising of coaches, trainers and community
sports officials who are currently actively involved in their
respective sports. The course was aimed at providing basic
principles in sports medicine and first aid to help manage
sports injuries.
Topics covered on the first day (tomorrow) included injury
prevention, structure and functions of the muscular-skeletal
system and hard and soft tissue injuries.
Day two topics included basic physiology, warm up and cool down,
moving the injured athlete and strapping and tapping. Drugs in
sport, sports nutrition, HIV/AIDS prevention through sport and
cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) were covered on the last
day.
