Muruks outclass city Raiders in Lae

By SAMPSON BONAI
CENTRE Charlie Wabo scored three tries to help his team Mabey & Johnson Muruks wallop Wari Vele Raiders 30-2 in a muddy and slippery Lae Rugby League field to win the SP Cup match yesterday.
Wabo put on an eye-catching performance with his tackles and ball handling skills which ran rings around Raiders in a one-sided game.
Jubilant coach Jack Kereme was lost for words and congratulated his players displaying the best football skills and sticking to their game plan to beat Raiders.
“We had a full strength team, those who were sidelined a few weeks ago due to injuries were recalled to the side which boosted their morale to go on a try scoring spree to win the game for Muruks,” Kereme said.
Wari Vele Raiders coach Richard Wagambie said, “The players were not tuned into our game plan and dropped too many balls which robbed us of the win.”
“Losing is not an excuse. We simply gave away the game. The players are always scared every time we play home away games,” he added.
Muruks were the first to register points through a good backline movement and to the forwards before back rower and captain Joseph Omai barged his way over and five-eighth Stanley Hondima collected the extras to race to an early 6-0 lead.
They stretched their lead in the first half when Raiders were caught napping and prop Simon Young barged his way over and Hondima raised the flags to sail away to healthy 12-0 lead.
Just before halftime Muruks were penalised for an infringement and Raiders centre Gimapau Keimelo collected the extras to take them into halftime break trailing 12-2.
Muruks scored three tries through centres Wabu and Jonathan Wagamo five-eighth Hondima and winger Mathew Puke and Hondima converted two tries to wrap up the game 30-2.
