Common rolls to stay as they are, says Trawen

By ELIZABETH MIAE
THE newly-updated electoral rolls will remain as they are, Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen said.
“Rolls that had been updated are final and legal and I stand by it. If there’s any issue to be raised, I think the correct avenue would be the Court of Disputed Returns,” Mr Trawen said yesterday.
This follows reports of candidates threatening to take the Electoral Commission to the court over discrepancies in the current electoral rolls.
In a media briefing, Mr Trawen said polling got off to slow start last Saturday due bad weather and it was delayed in some parts of the country due to the late arrival of polling materials.
Polling in Southern Highlands was extended from Sunday to yesterday due to bad weather.
Mr Trawen was also briefed by police on the ground that the troops deployed to Southern Highlands moved to Enga yesterday in preparation for polling today.
Certain parts of the country that did not vote on Saturday started casting ballots yesterday morning including Goilala district in Central province.
Polling officials who were headed for Goilala, were stranded in Port Moresby last weekend, but were airlifted to the area yesterday to begin polling.
Mr Trawen was very confident that polling throughout the country would end on schedule on July 10.
