Village leaders unhappy over Baki’s threat

THE leaders from Tambul/Nebilyer, Western Highlands province, demanded an apology from Police Commissioner Gari Baki for threatening to abort polling in their district.
Two councilors – Thomas Nimba and Stanely Aguma – along with two chiefs Peter Pilamb and Simon Numa – all from the former warring tribes – said the roadblock at the border of Hagen Central and Nebilyer was erected by supporters of a candidate (named) in the Hagen Central electorate.
Mr Pilamb said they were not happy with the threat from Mr Baki and wanted him to apologise to the people and to retract his statements carried by The National.
The leaders made these comments in reaction to news report in which Mr Baki threatened to ask the Electoral Commission to abort polling in Tambul/Nebilyer electorate if lawlessness in the area was not brought under control.
He said they respected the election and had stopped fighting for seven months ago.
The leaders said that for Mr Baki to issue a threat without investigating the people actually involved with the roadblock “was not good”.
Mr Pilamb said the people from Hagen Central living at the border set up the roadblock to stop Southern Highlanders based in Mt Hagen but who cast their votes in their province from returning to vote again on Friday in Western Highlands.
Mr Pilamb said the Nebilyer people could not be be blamed for the actions of other people living in the other electorate.
