Underpaid secs want better deal
I AM an executive secretary working
for the registrar of a semi-Government organisation.
My salary is around K15,000 per annum. I find it very difficult to
live on my fortnightly pay.
However, I chose this field and whether I like it or not, I am a
secretary. I have been a secretary for almost 14 years.
Every time I glance through our daily newspapers for vacancies for
anything good within the Government organisation, I find that the
starting annual salary is K12,000 or K14,000 for an executive
secretary, a stenographer, etc.
Whether you are an experienced secretary or a junior typist, that
is your starting salary and whether you like it or not, you have
to start from there once your application is accepted.
You make your way up but by the time you reach K20,000, that will
be like 10 years later.
It is very unfair that a junior typist working for a
well-established private company earns around K18,000 to K20,000
per annum.
An executive secretary or a personal assistance earns about
K30,000 plus.
No wonder private company employees are performing better than
public servants.
Many law firms are applying the same salary scale as the
Government departments.
Can the respective authorities look into this matter?
We are secretaries during the day and mothers after hours.
What is the president of the secretary’s association doing?
Has this topic being brought up during the so-called secretaries’
conference held annually?
If so, have they raised it up with the respective authorities?
I wish the organisation I work for is appreciative of my efforts
and next time send me to attend the conference so I can personally
air my frustrations.
Die-hard secretary
